ABSTRACT

One of the least invasive techniques is to insert reinforcement in bed joint, and integrate the same with masonry using suitable grout or mortar. The outcome of the research may also find significance in modelling reinforced brick masonry with reinforcement laid in mortar joints for improving seismic resistance of masonry structures. India has rich cultural and historical built heritages; many of these structures have been constructed using brick masonry. Unlike in the western countries, bricks in India are generally weak and relatively soft. As brick masonry has insignificant flexural strength, the spandrel the openings for door and windows are normally supported on arches. Masonry arches can be restored and rehabilitated using various strengthening techniques which involve intrusions. As brick masonry has insignificant flexural strength, the openings for door and windows are normally provided with the help of arches. Masonry arches behaved essentially as gravity and compression load bearing structures.
