ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses vibration characteristics by micro-tremor measurement and its relation to height, material property and structure type. It argues that the main cause for the deterioration of the inner gallery is the excessive deformation of a mound beneath the columns, which has tilted the columns and has opened roof stone gaps. The chapter aims to validate analysis model of Distinct Element Method (DEM) and to assess priority of maintenance and effectiveness of collapse prevention measures. The threshold angle of inclination for safety and possible measures for restraining gap developments have been studied by DEM. A coefficient of friction and contact spring constants necessary for DEM were provided by standard friction tests and simulation of small scale corbel arch experiments. These constants were examined by the simulation of static experiments of the small scale inner gallery model.
