ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how a smartphone can be converted into a measuring and monitoring equipment. The accelerometers and the two smartphones were fixed to the solid plate using bees wax, which is the usual practice in laboratory and on-site measurements when using fixing by screws or glue is not acceptable. Recorded photographs were sent to external storage using GSM connection of the smartphone to Internet. The whole monitoring was supervised from Warsaw via Internet. Measurement setup consisted of a smartphone, external electronic module and a probe. The electronic module was based on a low-cost integrated circuit analog devices5933, which provided a high precision impedance converter system. Smartphones can be used individually or can be connected into networks providing mutual and complementary reference measurements for displacement monitoring by means of image processing methods.
