ABSTRACT

Research on the mechanical behavior of brick masonry after being soaked is few, which mainly studied masonry compressive and shear performance before and after being soaked by the index of the moisture content. For the shear strength, all the brick masonry specimens were decreased in different degree. This chapter focuses on the compressive strength tests of mortar, brick and brick masonry after being soaked in water and being air-dried for different intervals. There are two main methods for determining the mechanical properties of brick masonry: one is the indirect test; and the other is a direct test method. On the basis of experimental investigation, the variation rule of compressive strength of mortar, brick and brick masonry with time were explored. Test results showed that the compressive strength of brick masonry made of clay plaster mortar components was decreased, but that made of cement mortar and mixed mortar components was improved.
