ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the results of different techniques that would be proper to use on especially small sized samples to determine their mechanical properties of historical mortars. The non-destructive and semi destructive tests like point-load test, the drilling resistance test, pull of test or ultra sound test are the pursuant methods for characterization of historical mediums. Revealing the existing material parameters is necessary not only for a good understanding of the material quality but also for a structural analysis. The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of materials is a required parameter in the assessment of the material quality. Cube specimens were used for UCS tests while prisms were used for point load tests. Uniaxial compression tests are mostly used experiments that reveal the compressive strength of the materials but it is a time-consuming and expensive test that requires significant specimen preparation.
