ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the numerical simulation and structural analyses of the Katholikon after the first phase of works, where grouting was the main structural intervention. The Katholikon belongs to the octagonal type and comprises the nave, the sanctuary, the narthex and four chapels, which shape its orthogonal plan. In the internal faces of the Katholikon, a mixture of cut, semi-cut and rubble stones were used together with bricks, as identified recently after the removal of the internal rendering mortar. In the entire model, the structure from the basement to the top of the arches and squinches that support the drum of the Katholikon is simulated, while the aforementioned model of the drum-dome system was placed on top. With the aforementioned procedure, a reliable calibration of the numerical model representing the structure of the Katholikon was ensured.
