ABSTRACT

Aland is a region of Finland that consists of an archipelago lying at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. It is autonomous, demilitarised and is the only monolingually Swedish speaking region in Finland. Aland's economy is heavily dominated by shipping, trade and tourism. The building of Aland Maritime Museum and its cultural resource and value were taken into account in decisions related to the restoration work to retain integrity and authenticity of the structure. The old building of Aland Maritime Museum was built during the years 1945-1946. It has a local heritage status and is protected by the local Building Act. The designed slab system in the building forms and supports a lectern that has been used for special exhibitions. It consists of five slabs spanning in two directions, the shorter span is 4.20 m and the longer span is 4.80 m.
