ABSTRACT

This chapter examines a building of great complexity, the former Salt and Tobacco State Monopoly Warehouse, and for its location, part of the historical center of Mantua added to the UNESCO site. An important step of the project is the evaluation of the building evolution through the stratigraphic survey of the fronts and the archive research. The characteristics of the building and of the component elements have in the complexity of their settlement and resulting from the different building steps, uses and ownerships, great historic interest and potential for use. The chapter analyses the potential vulnerability of the complex through the refinement of the knowledge on the building morphology and the materials, taking into account the evolution of the structure itself and its damage. It describes the sequence of the structural interventions, as key points for the evaluation of the static behaviour and determining constraints for the possible actions for the strengthening reuse of the building.
