ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the overall structural restoration project of the monastery and a concise synopsis of the structural pathology, assessment and interventions. The fortified Daphni Monastery is one of the major middle- Byzantine monuments, situated in a forestry area at 11 km from Athens on the Sacred Way of the Classic Antiquity, from Athens to Eleusis. Due to severe damage provoked to Daphni Monastery by the 1999 Athens earthquake, large scale structural restoration and conservation interventions were necessary not only to the Katholikon and its precious mural mosaics, but also to the cells of the south courtyard, the fortification walls and all archaeological ruins. The Directorate for Technical Research on Restoration was judged as absolutely necessary for the realization of all adequate research, investigations and pilot applications, together with the training of the scientific and technical personnel in the implementation of novel materials and techniques.
