ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the main techniques adopted for strengthening the existing masonry structures employing innovative organic and inorganic composite materials. Steel reinforced grout composites are comprised of ultra high tensile steel strands (UHTSS) applied through inorganic matrices. The chapter explains some fiber reinforced inorganic composites (FRCM-SRG) comprised of coated and non coated Auto-Re-pressive (AR) glass, carbon, and basalt fibers and of steel UHTSS fibers applied through different matrices. It presents some strengthening and retrofitting interventions on historic building at L'Aquila using FRCM-SRG composites. In the intervention, in the L'Aquila city center, the masonry vault of the considered block were strengthened with the application, below and over the vaults, with Steel Net G 220 applied through lime-based mortar Limecrete. In the intervention at Roio Poggio were employed FRCM composites comprised of different AR glass fiber nets and lime-based mortar. Carbon FRCM fiber nets provide high strength and high resistance to external attacks.
