ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the authentic properties of the historical site area; architectural properties of the vernacular buildings; material properties and construction techniques; and a proposal for a sustainable preservation and revitalization model to save the world heritage site of Cumalikizik Village using contemporary principles of conservation. It shows that vernacular structures were constructed using a holistic design approach. Regular maintenance and repairs are essential, especially for the adobe material, to eliminate the negative effects of water and moisture and preserve historical heritage. Local governments, non-governmental organizations, universities, the Chamber of Architects and public participation have always played major roles in the preservation of the village of Cumalikizik. In order to successfully restore the damaged houses, the principles established by the International Council on Monuments and Sites Charter concerning Built Vernacular Heritage were followed and traditional materials and crafts were used.
