ABSTRACT

Sculptures are decorative elements, which have been used in architecture on buildings facades for centuries. Mainly used in arts marble, limestone, sandstone are vulnerable to various degradation factors, which have been caused damages to sculptures for centuries. Conservators decided to support the figures on the palaces' tympanums using innovative polymer flexible joints, bonding bases of sculptures to the support and isolating the figures from vibrations. Sculptures at roofs are mainly supported on stiff and massive stone pedestals or directly on the structural elements of buildings. The main problem is that connections between sculpture bases and their support are in most cases stiff, are made from mineral mortars. The thin layer of polymer physical model was used as a new flexible connection between the sculptures bases and the structural support, replacing the stiff mortar that was crumbled under the vibration excitation.
