ABSTRACT

Rockfill creep is mainly caused by particle breakage. This paper conducted the particle breakage experiment on rockfill materials using a large direct shear apparatus, introduced discarding parameters to analyze test results, and carried out 3D creep computation on a typical project. It is concluded that in the range of normal stress in study, there is a linear relationship between the discarding ratio/weighted discarding ratio and normal force with a significant turning point of slope. As the particle size decreases, the relationship between the discarding ratio and normal stress shows a linear tendency. When analyzing the rockfill creep, it was found that dam body settlement, horizontal displacement, slab deflection, and peripheral joint deformation increased by 46.3–150%, suggesting that rockfill creep has a great influence on the safety of Concrete Face Rockfill Dam (CFRD). However, as the dam is not high, there is little possibility that the studied dam would experience slab tension crack and standard-exceeding water stop, regardless of its large deformation during water storage period.
