ABSTRACT

The morphological development of the Danube in Slovak territory was very dynamic in the past. The flow conditions and river processes in the Danube were also changed substantially in the 20th century by the construction of flood protection dikes, river regulation works, operation of the upstream situated cascade of hydraulic structures in Austria, as well as the Gabcikovo hydropower plant at the Slovak territory, which has accelerated the river processes downstream of Sap. One-dimensional morphological model MIKE 11 was used to analyse the hydraulic conditions that influence sediment transport and to predict how the river channel is likely to change at the 100 km long Slovak-Hungarian river section downstream from Sap. In general, the prognosis assumes that the intensity of morphological changes in the river channel will moderate in the near future, which corresponds to the previously predicted trends in connection with the river’s decreasing gradient.
