ABSTRACT

Kelut volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. More than thirty eruptions of Kelut volcano have been recorded in historical times, producing tremendous volume of volcanic materials which cause severe riverbed aggradation and reservoir sedimentation. Riverbed aggradation of the Brantas River due to sediment from the eruptions of Kelut volcano had caused severe flooding in the middle reach of Brantas. Severe sedimentation in Wlingi and Lodoyo reservoirs occured after the eruption of Kelut volcano in 1990. Following the eruption of Kelut volcano in February 2014, the deposit in the northern skirts of the volcano became debris flowing to the Konto River and cause riverbed aggradation. This paper will discuss the problems on sedimentation in rivers and reservoirs located near Kelut volcano after its eruptions. The damages of infrastructures from the results of field observations following eruption of Kelut volcano in February 2014 will also be discussed.
