ABSTRACT

In order to estimate the grain size of channel embankments, which can withstand ship induced propulsion flux (e.g. bow thruster), a new turbulence based approach is introduced. This contribution will summarize the state of work in numerical modeling of ship induced flux processes related to the usage of a bow thruster, done at the IWD on behalf of the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute, Karlsruhe, Germany (BAW). Concluding a comparison between the scale model measurements, carried out in Duisburg at the Development Centre for Ship Technology and Transport Systems (DST) commissioned by the BAW in 2014, and the numerical modeling processes will be provided.
