ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to describe the experience of Uncertainty and subsequent coping strategies employed by patients diagnosed and living with cancer. This is presented from the perspective of Uncertainty associated the theory The Omnipresence of Cancer. A comprehensive literature review was conducted. Based on these data, an evolutionary concept analysis was performed. The results corresponded with the previous concept analysis as proposed by Shaha et al. (2008). The concept of Uncertainty was found to consist of three attributes. These are: uncertainty due to lack of information, uncertainty regarding the evolution of the disease, and uncertainty regarding the future. Ways of supporting patients experiencing Uncertainty due to a cancer diagnosis are outlined as well as outcomes associated with the experience of Uncertainty in cancer patients. Recommendations for practice are provided.
