ABSTRACT

This paper addresses the Fourier infra-red spectroscopy to quantitatively analyze the relative content change of functional groups of asphalt, by calculating the differences of the absorption peak relative integral area in the infra-red spectrum. Then two technical indicators (aging index and recycling index) are proposed which can reflect the degree of aging of asphalt and the effect of vegetable oil on the recycling of aged asphalt. The correlations between these two technical indicators and the other basic physical performance indexes of asphalt such as penetration, ductility, softening point and viscosity are also studied. This research significantly contributes to understand the aging of asphalt and regenerating aged asphalt with vegetable oil.
