ABSTRACT

Repairing road using prefabricated rollable asphalt pavement is a novel idea. To provide rollable asphalt mixture with high bending ability, an appropriative modified asphalt binder (RMA) was developed. To evaluate the performance of RMA, a virgin binder and a SBS modified binder were used as contrast. The penetration, softening point, ductility test, Dynamic Shear Rehometer (DSR), and Bending Beam Rhometer (BBR) tests were conducted. The method for determining the high temperature performance of asphalt mixture prepared with RMA was established. The road performance and rheological properties of RMA were investigated. Finally, a test section was constructed by using prefabricated rollable asphalt pavement. Results showed RMA binder has the highest softening point and ductility, but its penetration degree was close to that of the virgin binder. Both the high and low temperature performance of RMA asphalt mixtures were superior to the SBS modified asphalt mixtures. Only RMA asphalt mixture can meet the bending deformation requirements of rollable asphalt pavement. A test section verified the feasibility of construction using prefabricated rollable asphalt pavement.
