ABSTRACT

The Exposed-Aggregate Concrete Pavement (EACCP) has good skid-resistance and low-noise. The excellent performance is mainly contributed by its rich surface texture, that is, the distribution condition of surface exposed-aggregate. Exposed-aggregate degree is usually employed for the evaluation of surface texture. But the test method is time-consuming and subjective, so that the result cannot show the real surface condition quickly and accurately. In this study, digital image technology was introduced as a new method for the evaluation. Firstly, surface images of EACCP were obtained using digital camera. Secondly, pretreatment processing on the images, such as smoothing, sharpening, thresholding, were carried out for the reacquired. Thirdly, the shapes of exposed-aggregate were analyzed based on morphological theory, and then exposed-aggregate degree, which was the number and area of exposed-aggregates, was calculated for the evaluation. The correlation analysis with friction coefficient shows that, the new method is feasible.
