ABSTRACT

The EU directive 2008/96/EC (in Italy implemented through laws n.35/2011 and n.137/2012) requires the establishment and implementation of procedures relating to road safety impact assessments. Inspections should be carried out in the sections of the road and questionnaires should be filled where 200 m-long sections are considered. Such an approach provides insights to road departments in terms of main issues. Unfortunately, the above procedure doesn’t bring to a quantitative approach and ranking among different section/roads. Consequently, the objectives and scope of this study were confined into: a) modelling the reliability of a road based on on-site investigations; b) applying the model to several case-studies. A model was set up and applied to two rural roads in the Province of Reggio Calabria (Italy). Results demonstrate that the method can quantify the safety level of a road and can benefit both researchers and practitioners.
