ABSTRACT

To improve pavement structural strength and performance, it is important to establish the direct correlation between overlay design method and pavement performance. This paper established a multi-index design method of asphalt overlay based on performance. This method can design new overlay when the original pavement or overlay is not efficient. Firstly, according to the investigation of typical freeways in seasonal frozen region, the main distress types are determined. As the result, structural strength, rutting depth and transverse cracking are determined as evaluation indexes of the overlay design. Secondly, new forecast model and attenuation models of the above evaluation indexes under different traffic load levels, pavement structure, and environmental factors are built. In the end, this paper proposed multi-index design method of asphalt pavement overlay based on these models.
