ABSTRACT

Urban areas play very important roles in economic and social development, and with more than 20 years of rapid economic growth, urban development has achieved remarkable success in China. In a large city the advantages of a better environment for investment and economic conditions, well-equipped city functions and relatively high input-output efficiency are especially notable. At a basic level of urban mobility, people will first think of traffic congestion, and longer time to travel, before they become involved in their various urban activities. The transport infrastructure provides the physical guarantee for people and goods to move, and it also has the function of a catalyst to induce new socioeconomic activities. The successful experiences have demonstrated that urban mobility development must adapt to a city’s socioeconomic development and its cultural, historical and environmental characteristics. The land-use control policy and low level of motorization in many cities opens up the possibility to implement a more innovative urban mobility strategy.
