ABSTRACT

Laparoscopic sterilization is the most common type of female sterilization surgery performed in the United States. There are essentially four major methods. There is currently only one available hysteroscopic sterilization device approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. This approach has been increasing in popularity over the past decade. All of the laparoscopic methods described may be performed through either a single-puncture technique using an operating laparoscope, or through a double-puncture technique. The first technique examined is bipolar coagulation, followed by clips and bands. Then salpingectomy is looked at, something that occurs in the event that tubal pathology prevents proper placement of a clip or occluding device. Finally, the focus is on hysteroscopic sterilization.
