ABSTRACT

Human diseases are caused by 1,415 species of infectious organisms, including 217 virus and prions, 538 (38.0%) bacteria and rickettsia, 307 (2.7%) fungi, 66 (4.7%) protozoa, and 287 (20.3%) helminthes [157]. Out of these species, 868 (61%) from 313 different genera are zoonotic, in that these diseases can be transmitted between humans and animals.
