ABSTRACT

Biometric based authentication is a prime requirement in this digital age and slap fingerprint (i.e., all fingerprints of a hand) offers highly reliable authentication. The reason for this phenomenon is that the fingerprints withstand temporal deformations, provides highly distinctive features, acceptable as a legal supporting evidence in courts and spoofing is difficult. Despite these capabilities, the efficacy of slap fingerprint is restricted for authentication. This chapter provides the overview of existing work in the realm of slap image authentication. It also discusses the various factors that limit the efficacy of slap fingerprint for authentication. Moreover, it provides some potential research directions in the realm of slap fingerprints based authentication.
