ABSTRACT

Encouraging patients to make changes that may improve their health and quality of life can be a complex journey for everyone involved. One approach designed to make this process more effective is motivational interviewing (MI), an interpersonal style of facilitating change within individuals. It is based around the principle that behaviour change is elicited not through confrontation or the imposition of ideas, but through guided self-motivation.

This chapter explores further:

The origins of motivational interviewing.

The elements which make up motivational interviewing, principles, the spirit of motivational interviewing, change talk and OARS.

Using motivational interviewing in practice and suggestions for clinicians.
