ABSTRACT

The UK benefit system can be complicated at the best of times; it has been constantly evolving in recent years as successive governments implement changes. These issues should not detract from a simple fact – depending on personal circumstances, patients may be entitled to assistance. The benefit system exists to provide practical help and financial support for those who are unemployed or looking for work, have a low income, a disability, are bringing up children, are retired, care for someone or are ill themselves.

This chapter explores further:

The complexities of the United Kingdom (UK) benefit system.

The different forms of benefit payment and how people may be eligible for them.

How people can apply for and be supported in applying for different benefits.

The impact the benefits process may have on people with limited means.
