ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how to approach adapting a novel to a game and considers for when adapting a game to a novel. Several games have been made out of novels, and even more novels have been written for games. The first step in turning a book into a game is securing the game rights to the book. Games are young enough that few of them have fallen into the public domain, although some have been voluntarily released that way or published under a Creative Commons license. Some eager writers have been known to sit down and write an entire novel as a means of showing off their talent and their familiarity with the game the book is based upon. While games are great at presenting intriguing choices and showing action, novels are even better at digging into a character's inner world and motivations.
