ABSTRACT

Smoking cessation should be an integral part of care for respiratory patients and a component of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). This chapter explores the role, benefits and barriers for the implementation of a smoking cessation programme in PR. It overviews the issue of tobacco dependence as a medically treatable condition and the pathophysiology and diagnosis of tobacco addiction. It also provides a description of pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapies to manage physical and behavioural components of smoking, in a clinical context. Different educational and physical components of PR that provide opportunities for smoking cessation are analysed. A clinical practical approach for smoking cessation in smokers undergoing PR is described. The crucial role of respiratory physiotherapists in the smoking cessation process and the need for education in this field is discussed.
