ABSTRACT

Suppurative lung diseases represent a diverse group of chronic conditions varying from idiopathic bronchiectasis to cystic fibrosis (CF). The current chapter reviews the benefits of exercise training and airway clearance techniques (ACTs), which have been shown to provide positive benefits on lung function, exercise capacity and health-related quality of life in both non-CF bronchiectasis and CF. The physiological consequences of airway obstruction, gas trapping and sputum clearance are discussed. The unique aspects of CF management including infection control precautions and time constraints are briefly reviewed. Areas in need of future research such as long-term adherence with exercise training and the effects of exercise on respiratory exacerbations and survival are highlighted.
