ABSTRACT

Many survivors of ICU experience persisting functional disability and reduced health-related quality of life even years after the acute event due to reduction in muscle force and persistent neuropsychological and cognitive impairment.

The present approach of early mobilization of ICU patients is widely shared and accepted. Early mobilization, physiotherapy techniques and management of airways are supported with randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews and recommendations including protocols for mobilization and neuromuscular electrical stimulation.
