ABSTRACT

Learning is a complex cognitive, social and motor development process for people who have chronic respiratory disease. Education that supports learning is essential to healthy behaviours. Learning about patients’ respiratory condition and the transformation their lives will undertake as they adapt to their changing health status provides a foundation for self-management, health behaviour change and engagement with the healthcare system. Pulmonary rehabilitation provides an ideal opportunity for people to learn, with scheduled experiences connecting patients with healthcare professionals and peers to establish a community of learners, all supporting each other. This chapter explores education in pulmonary rehabilitation, outlining the theoretical basis for educational design, appraising the literature examining the education component and providing practical insights for educational design in pulmonary rehabilitation, including technology enhanced education. While the importance of family/caregivers is recognized, the chapter primarily discusses the education needs of patients.
