ABSTRACT

The word Bahrain in Arabic means “two seas”, as in ancient times it was believed that under the salty water of the sea there are streams of fresh water. For a long time, Bahrain has been well known in the region for its excellent health and education systems with an adult literacy rate of 87.7% and good health indicators. The first clinic in Bahrain was established in 1888 by Mr Samuel Zwemer, an American scholar and medical student who frequently stopped over in Bahrain. According to the Ministry of Health, Bahrain has adopted a “Health for All” policy since 1979 through many governmental hospitals and around 26 primary health-care centres and three clinics that are distributed all over the country. Bahrain has two medical colleges: the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences of the Arabian Gulf University, and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Bahrain.
