ABSTRACT

Primary health care (PHC) has been the primary focus of the Ministry of Health and Population since its establishment. PHC facilities in Egypt range between health offices, rural health units, maternal and child health facilities, school health facilities, and family health units and centres. As the Family Health Model is taken as Egypt’s model for providing integrated, people-centred PHC, further elaboration on PHC in Egypt will focus on giving a comprehensive account of the Family Health Model (FHM). The FHM was designed as the first point of health care at the community level that provides quality primary health-care services based on “national planning standards and guidelines”. Development of the package has taken into consideration some of the most prevalent health problems in Egypt requiring special attention such as high maternal mortality, poor antenatal care, and high rates of infectious, parasitic, malnutrition, and reproductive health problems.
