ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the use of eLearning tools with experienced general practitioners to transition them to the family practice model of care. Family medicine as a discipline was started by general practitioners on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1960s as a counterculture to post-war medical specialization, which had resulted in a narrow biomedical focus and fragmentation of care. The World Organization of Family Doctors defined six main competencies that a general practitioner/family physician has to master. Technology is a viable method to transition general practitioners into the family practice model of care. The presence of information technology support is also needed while providing a course in a blended format. The main challenge facing the implementation of family practice in the Eastern Mediterranean Region is the limited number of available family medicine training programs and subsequently the limited number of practicing family physicians.
