ABSTRACT

The analysis of the masonry walls and of the construction techniques adopted was performed almost exclusively on the external wall of the basilica, as the interiors are covered with mosaics or plaster that hide the masonry work. The most relevant damage to the stone surface was the extensive stucco covering with cement and other materials carried out during previous maintenance operations. In some areas the fillings completely covered the stone surface, hiding the masonry. The state of conservation of the surface was severely compromised due to the de-cohesion of the stones and the presence of widespread alveolation of the stone surface, especially in the areas where wind power is greater. Investigations on the type of stone and on the mortars put the basis for a systematic study of the walls’ structure, allowing the recognition of the various historical periods.
