ABSTRACT

The contribution of mineral fertilizers cannot be ignored, as they have sustained world agriculture for many years. However, imbalanced use of fertilizer in agricultural systems remains a concern. Faulty nutrient management often causes loss of nutrients beyond the bounds of the agricultural field, and fails to address a good analogy between nutrient supply and use efficiency. The concept of fertilizer best management practices (FBMPs) comes to relevance at this context, being the soil-crop management practices that lead to the best possible use of applied inputs resulting in minimal adverse effects on environment. Applying nutrients in congruence with 4R nutrient stewardship can address the key principle of FBMP. Although many methodological advancements are there in this aspect, only the most relevant practices among them have been talked about in this chapter. The methodologies involved and possible outcomes achieved through these practices might be of importance for different stakeholders dealing with the fertilizer management aspect.
