ABSTRACT

This chapter presents guidance and recommendations that should be considered when developing new mobile health technologies to support the self-management and transition of Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with disabilities to independence. It provides recommendations identified by panellists and participants at the October 2017 State of the Science conference conducted by the Technology Increasing Knowledge: Technology Optimizing Choice Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center. The chapter discusses key issues and recommendations related to engagement and tailoring, innovation, research, integration and sustainability. Mobile technology – including sensors, apps, games and other innovations – represents an opportunity to include and engage AYAs and their family so as to better address their needs and support their transitions to health self-management and independence. Moreover, as scientists, they should identify existing standards and best practices, document the steps and processes they engage in and share the outcomes that they experience, whether positive or negative, so the researchers who follow them can build on their work.
