ABSTRACT

Ultrasound training relies on motor skills and visual-cognitive skills. These skills can be trained in the clinical setting as well as in the simulated setting or by using e-learning programs. Clinical training does not automatically result in expert performance, but a certain volume of scans is needed. Simulation-based training is an effective method to improve trainees’ clinical skills before entering supervised practice. Other effects include decreased patient discomfort, shorter examination time, reduced need for supervised practice, and improved patient satisfaction. E-learning programs are just as effective as traditional lectures for knowledge acquisition, but these programs and the use of test-based learning and assessment require substantial quality assurance and validation efforts, respectively.
