ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a study that was based on an extensive survey and field observations during the year 2014–2015. In this study, attempts were made to find out various antidiabetic plants, which were collected from Meenachil Taluk of the Kottayam district, Kerala. It also discusses the efficacy of herbal formulations in antidiabetic treatments and diabetic-associated health problems. Among the total 50 taxa of antidiabetic plants, the group dicots are dominating with 42 species in 30 families and monocots with eight species in six families. The total life forms of antidiabetic plants present in the study area revealed that trees are more dominant with 17 species, followed by herbs with 14 species and climbers with 10 species and shrubs with 9 species. The potential for antidiabetic plants, which are documented through the study, are highly valuable for the treatment of diabetes.
