ABSTRACT

Although the design of wheel and rail profiles was introduced at the beginning of the railway industry, in many cases, rail vehicles are still suffering from deterioration of wheel-rail relations. Restoration of wheel and rail profiles may not be the optimal choice to solve this problem, it is better to design a “worn” profile according to the specific track route. To accomplish this task, this paper presents an asymmetrical design method for the determination of grinding track profiles. This method utilizes the concept of inverse design and aims at improving vehicle dynamic performance. Rolling radii difference versus wheelset lateral displacement function is chosen as the core object function. Wheel rail wear rate is chosen as the auxiliary design object during the design process. Results of computer program show the efficiency and effectiveness of the presented method. Practical implementations have just been carried out in several grinding site in China.
