ABSTRACT

Depending on the lipid composition of the matrix of lipid-based nanosystems, this chapter considers lipid nanoparticles, namely monoolein aqueous dispersions, solid lipid nanoparticles, and nanostructured lipid carriers. It provides an overview of some lipid-based nanosystems, namely solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers, and monoolein aqueous dispersions, loaded with some phytoconstituents studied by research group. The use of nanoparticles in medicine is widespread, spanning from therapeutic applications to diagnostics and imaging fields. Nanoparticles are progressively applied to molecular diagnostics leading to the development of several technologies. The small size of nanoparticles allows their efficient penetration across barriers to reach individual cells, enabling the storage of the drug in a specific site, possibly reducing side effects and toxicity and enhancing the therapeutic efficacy. The nanoparticles dimensions are influenced by the difference in temperature between the obtained microemulsion and the cold water.
