ABSTRACT

Research on cricket is minimal and little is known about the factors that predict or enhance cricketing performance and how best to train cricketers in ecologically valid environments. This chapter contends that cricket is a complex sports system that is difficult to understand within the framework of one simple underlying theory. The chapter introduces the concepts of complex systems science to encourage researchers and practitioners to study the coordinated behaviour/s emerging from the interactions between the different components of the cricket system. The purpose of which is to better understand the determinants of what constitutes ‘good performance’ and to ensure that cricketers are trained appropriately for the best outcomes.
