ABSTRACT

The Indirect Tensile Test configuration (ITT) is extensively used for the determination of the stiffness properties of asphalt mixtures. The equation for the calculation of the stiffness includes the Poisson ratio and it could be demonstrated that the influence of this value on the stiffness result is very significant. The Semi Circular Bending test (SCB) is used for the determination of fracture and fatigue properties of asphalt mixtures. In this paper, the SCB configuration was adopted for the determination of the dynamic modulus of asphalt mixtures. The main advantage of this configuration is that the influence of the Poisson ratio on the dynamic modulus calculation is practically non significant. A 2D-FEM model has been used for the development of an equation for the calculation of the dynamic modulus. An asphalt mixture was tested according to this proposed procedure for its validation and the obtained results are presented and discussed.
