ABSTRACT

The present paper presents two types of solar pavements, namely thermal and electrical collector pavements, as an example of innovative structure leading to sustainable road infrastructure. Studies have confirmed the feasibility of harvesting solar energy by applying innovation technologies on asphalt pavement.Thermal and electrical collector solar pavement can be implemented in order to cover thermal and electrical needs of the urban environment, they can harness energy to be used in different applications, reducing pollution and energy consumption and they protect the same road pavement infrastructure. The paper reviews the latest progress on solar pavement technology, present some considerations about the advantages and barriersfor road operators in implementing these pavements and, also, some related pilot projects around the world.
