ABSTRACT

Asphalt pavement friction is interrelated with road safety. Macrotexture is one of the main contributors to frictional levels. Until now, the known static method sand patch test provides measurements of the Mean Texture Depth (MTD), which is both location-specific and time-consuming. Contrariwise, the laser profiler method has gained popularity as it can measure the Mean Profile Depth (MPD) of pavement surfaces quickly and efficiently. However, as in many countries the specifications regarding macrotexture threshold values are in terms of MTD, few scientific approaches focus on how to measure macrotexture in a more effective way and as such, the current practice is to access existing MTD-MPD equations. This study aims at investigating the transferability of those equations in accommodating macrotexture data. The research findings encourage the transferability of MPD values to MTD ones.
