ABSTRACT

After the European Standard EN1317 preparation, several systems developed that cover all the performance classes. These systems differ greatly from one another regarding their structure and more specifically their construction material, the grounding type, the number, the shape, the dimensions of the components etc. The proper operation of each system in the event of a vehicle deflection requires skillful installation in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Consequently, the level of road safety provided does not depend solely on the correct selection (according to the technical guideline) of safety barriers systems. Equally crucial factors that must be considered when selecting safety barriers systems is the limitation of the number of different systems on the road network, the compatibility with existing ones, the simplicity in installation as well as the possibility of simple and fast maintenance at low cost.
