ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the reactors' solids inventory (total suspended solids (TSS), volatile suspended solids (VSS), and powdered activated carbon (PAC) concentrations), as well as the influent and effluent soluble chemical oxygen demand values. The disposal options considered included discharge to a publicly owned treatment works (POTW), discharge to a surface water body or on-site use for landscape irrigation and dust control utilizing the POTW for disposal of excess as needed. A biophysical process which utilizes a suspended growth biological culture supplemented by the addition of PAC to the aeration basin was recommended as the basic treatment system. The dewatering activity is part of BKK Corporations plan to close and maintain that portion of the landfill containing deposits of hazardous waste in accordance with Resource Conservation and Recovery Act requirements. To prevent potential organic compound emissions from the reactors, off-gasses were piped to the landfill's flares for incineration.
