ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a risk assessment/management methodology which is effective in selecting among the various alternatives. It illustrates application to an actual case which demonstrates how: the multiple objectives corresponding to concerns involved in comparisons among alternatives are identified; the impacts and interactions involved in each alternative are assessed and compared; the consequences of each alternative are evaluated; and a decision is reached concerning which alternative to select. The additional scorecards are presented to the decision makers, and the process of selection is continued until a decision is made. The strategies range in extremes from "no action" to "abandoning the site and relocating local residents." In between are management options of containing the hazard, partial restoration of the site, complete restoration of the site and full treatment of the contaminated media. The remediation options are compared in respect to six major variables, namely: technological feasibility, costs, socioeconomic – environmental – health impacts and regulatory compliance.
